OUR SOULS AT NIGHT
by Kent Haruf
Truly a gem of a book,Our Souls At Night, is like a cool drink on a hot afternoon or a leisurely walk with a good friend with whom you just don’t get to spend enough time. It’s peaceful and uplifting – and replete with ideas and observations that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.
The story focuses on Addie Moore and Louis Waters, widow and widower living in a small, Midwestern town, who decide to keep each other company, much to the shock of neighbors, friends and family. A lovely and unconventional love story unfolds between two people “of a certain age” – original not only in its subject matter, but in its honesty and superb execution. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to defy society’s expectations and just do what feels good and right? Perhaps that’s the appeal of this book. Addie and Louis do just that – while in their seventies.
At the risk of sounding like a paperback cover blurb, I read this (albeit short) entire book in a few hours. It filled me up and made me happy. I predict it will do the same for you. (Liz)
