SWEETBITTER

SWEETBITTER

by Stephanie Danler

Another popular read, which I am a bit late getting around to,Sweetbitter was every bit as entertaining as promised.  I have not watched the television adaptation, but I can imagine it is also quite fun.

This book takes a gossipy look behind the scenes at one of New York's most famous and prestigious restaurants, Union Square Café.  Told from the perspective of a brand new server (actually, backwaiter), the reader gets a front row seat to the dramas, romances and shenanigans that happen in the kitchen and amongst the serving staff.

I found the restaurant stories fascinating, and wanted even more about the rituals, lingo and routine there.  I was less interested in the romance and backstory of the protagonist, Tess.  She’s from a small town, she’s trying to find her place in the world, she falls for the bad boy…it doesn’t feel very new or exciting to me.

Overall though, a very fun read that will definitely make you think twice the next time you go out to eat! (Lily)
