THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS
by M. R. Carey
Full disclosure, Dan and I listened to this one on tape, so I can’t technically say that I “read” it, but what I can enthusiastically say, is go read/listen to it! The audiobook is read by Finty Williams, who is an incredible voice over artist (and actress), which certainly increased my enjoyment.
My recommendation, however, is based on the fact that the book itself is clever, well paced and original. It is a page-turner while still containing fully embodied characters. I don’t want to reveal too much about the story, or even the genre for fear of spoiling the very gradual reveal that kept me riveted the whole story. But it is set in a dystopian future and the story is mostly told through the eyes of a little girl who has never known anything else.
Like all successful dystopian novels, Carey brilliantly creates a world that seems completely strange, and yet scarily possible. Her themes of otherness, disease and the value of an individual life all feel very relevant in this particular moment.
It’s a fun read, if a little gruesome at times. Perfect for the beach, or your next road trip!
P.S. The movie is fine, and Glen Close is amazing, but you only get the surprise once…you will not enjoy the book AND the movie! (Lily)
