HARRY POTTER AND THE CURESED CHILD
Parts 1 and 2
by J. K. Rowling, John Tiffany & Jack Thorne
For those who are confused: no, there is not a new Harry Potter novel out. This is the published script of the play that is currently performing on Broadway and the West End in London, and it is a delight!
The Cursed Child reads very quickly because it is almost entirely dialogue. There are some stage directions, many quite poetic, but they leave quite a lot to the reader's imagination and the show's creative team. The absolute best part about reading this book is getting to spend a few hours back in the world of Harry Potter with a new story that takes place 19 years after Book 7 ends. Seeing all those wonderful characters as adults is fascinating and funny and heart-warming.
If I had one criticism of the book, it would be that some of the dialogue feels a bit self-conscious to me—very aware that it is a play, so occasionally pandering for laughs. I think the novels and movies work best when they take themselves utterly seriously. It is their earnestness that allows you to believe in the wizarding world. I have no doubt that audiences will be be drawn in, seeing magic created live in front of them by the incredible creators and actors who worked on the show.
My recommendation (without having seen it myself) would be see the play if you can. If you can’t and you want a dose of the Boy Who Lived, pick up this script and enjoy! (Lily)
