THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN

THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN

by Jim DeFede

The musical Come From Away is easily one of my favorite shows of the last ten years. It tells the story of the days after 9/11 when 36 planes were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland rather than their U.S. destinations. The Day The World Came To Town follows the same events, with many of the same characters, although the two are not related in anything other than subject matter. Each has its own authors who conducted their own interviews.

The book goes more in depth and covers more characters than the musical, so it is fun to get to know even more about the incredible town that opened its arms to the world on such a scary and tragic day.  By the time the “plane people” were allowed to deplane and the residents had found shelter for all of them in schools, churches, and even their own homes, the town’s population almost doubled. The visitors stayed for almost six days.

This is one of the most incredible real stories I have ever heard. I think it moves and inspires people because it illuminates a moment of true human connection and kindness when the world felt very dark.  In many ways our world has only gotten darker and more confusing since 9/11. So, if you need something to restore a little of your faith in humanity—and this week I think we all do—this is the book for you.  (Lily)
