FURIOUSLY HAPPY: A Funny Book About Horrible Things
by Jenny Lawson
(January 2018)
I have honestly never laughed out loud so many times while reading a book. The off-beat, self-deprecating humor stands out in my memory even as Lawson deals with difficult and important personal topics.
AMERICANAH
by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche
(March 2019)
Everything about Americanah, from the engaging story to the beautiful and thought-provoking writing, made it easily one of my all-time favorite books. Adiche expertly mixes coming of age with astute commentary on America’s racial problems, all with a sympathetic protagonist and a great story.
ANATHEM
by Neal Stephenson
(May 2019)
Potentially one of the strangest books I have ever loved, Anathem creates an alternate world that feels so real that even several years after reading it I still occasionally find myself thinking of words invented by Stephenson. The slow unfolding of the rules and realities of Anathem’s world kept me turning pages faster and faster, and completely discombobulated when it was done.
BECOMING
by Michelle Obama
(June 2019)
My mom and I both reviewed this book, and it certainly stands out for me as one of the best of the last few years. Obama’s writing style is engaging and inspiring while her story and sentiments left me awe-struck and motivated to do better and more in my own life.
