THE BOOK OF PHOENIX

THE BOOK OF PHOENIX

by Nnedi Okorafor

Another reading challenge book that took me out of my comfort zone, this one was definitely not my cup of tea.  Set in a dystopian future where the environment has more or less been destroyed, the government has been experimenting on people with special genetics to create even more extraordinary speciMen, as they are called.  Phoenix is a young girl with an incredible mind and some very special physical gifts.

This is the first book in a series, and the world Okorafor creates is, at times, interesting, but her simple writing style was underwhelming, rather than illuminating. Perhaps intended for a younger audience, I have to imagine there are better dystopian books out there. (Lily)
