THE UNCOUPLING
by Meg Wolitzer
This is a classic example of good cover, good premise, bad book. I always am drawn to Wolitzer’s cover art, and the idea of a modern day Lysistrata is great! But this book, sadly, is not. The whole amazing point of Lysistrata is that the women knowingly and purposefully withhold sex (the only currency they have) to achieve political change in their city. In this book a magic spell makes many of the women suddenly uninterested in sex, and then, just as suddenly, interested again. There is no political point or change except maybe the men appreciate how good they had it. Which is pretty anti-feminist if you ask me.
Basically…ugh. I was disappointed in this book from start to finish. (Lily)
