THE PERFECT NANNY
by Leila Slimani
I was looking for an easy thriller to read on our lake vacation this July, and The Perfect Nanny was billed as “the french Gone Girl.” What could be better? The answer: lots and lots of books are better than this one. First, it starts with a mother coming home from work to discover that the nanny has murdered her two children. So right there, probably not going to be my cup of tea with three young kids of my own. But then as the book meanders through the psychological history of both the parents and the nanny, I got the distinct feeling it wasn’t going anywhere. And it seriously does not go anywhere. There is truly no explanation of why the nanny did it in the actual moment, nor any resolution about what happened afterward. I found this book extremely annoying and strongly encourage you to save your time and energy for something better! (Lily)
